Manchester United changed Kieran Trippier transfer plans
Kieran Trippier is waiting to discover the outcome of his appeal against a worldwide ban from all football-related activity.
Manchester United shelved plans for a move for Atletico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier this month amid uncertainty over the outcome of his worldwide ban for breaching betting rules.
Trippier, 30, was given a 10-week ban and fined £70,000 by the Football Association on December 23 but the suspension has been put on hold, pending an appeal, and Trippier started in Atletico’s 2-0 win over Sevilla on Tuesday night.
The MEN understands Trippier’s suspension scuppered a potential mid-season move to United, who remain admirers of the England international. Bury-born Trippier has entered the last 18 months of his United contract and the prospect of a move to his boyhood club appeals to the former City youth teamer.
United identified Trippier as an ideal right-back to compete with the £50million Aaron Wan-Bissaka, whose attacking limitations have been apparent again this season. Trippier has assisted five goals this season to Wan-Bissaka’s one and, despite intense competition from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker, Trippier has started in six of England’s eight internationals this season and captained them against Wales. Wan-Bissaka is yet to attain an England cap.
United right-back Timothy Fosu-Mensah flew to Germany on Tuesday after the MEN revealed he was on the brink of a £1.5million move to Bayer Leverkusen. Teenage right-back Ethan Laird has joined MK Dons on loan and Brandon Williams, who made just his second start at right-back for United against Watford in the FA Cup third round win, is receptive to a Premier League loan.
Williams’ switch to the right would offset the departure of Fosu-Mensah and provide United with recognisable cover for Wan-Bissaka. Diogo Dalot is midway through a season-long loan to AC Milan and has played 14 times for the Serie A leaders.
United are likely to be receptive to the permanent sale of Dalot, 21, in the summer as he started only once in the league last term and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer selected Fosu-Mensah ahead of him against Crystal Palace and West Ham in July. Not Downloading? Please Do This
